Seizure First Aid: What to Do and What to Avoid
Learning seizure first aid is an essential part of healthcare education. One in ten persons may experience a seizure at some point in their lives.
Today, our basic nursing assistant school in Cook County would like to share with you first aid tips for seizures:
- Free them from restrictive clothing that may hinder their breathing
If they are wearing a scarf or tie, make sure to remove or loosen that piece of clothing. Additionally, never give a person having a seizure CPR. This is taught in CPR class in Park Ridge, IL.
- Never hold the individual down
Instead of holding them down, allow the patient to move on the ground so as to prevent hurting them.
- Never put something in their mouths
Never let them bite onto something as this may result in them choking or breaking their teeth.
- Place something soft under their head
If the person is on the ground, add something soft like a jacket or pillow to secure their head and prevent injuries. Clear the area of items that may hurt the person.
- Stay with the person until the seizure ends
Never leave a person having a seizure. Keep calm and stay with them and count the seconds during their episode. If the seizure continues for up to 5 minutes, call 911 immediately.
- Comfort the person and provide assistance
After the seizure ends, let them come to their senses and comfort them as they do so. Let them sit somewhere safe and offer your assistance in them seeking medical help.
