As a certified nursing assistant (CNA), you are obligated to take certain actions in particular instances. As a CNA, your main responsibility is to report any cases of abuse, whether verified or merely suspected. Abuse can come in many forms and a CNA has a duty to know these. If your patient says that he has been hit or abused in any other way, you will have to report it immediately. Sometimes, patients use actions or other indirect ways of telling you that they have been victimized. You just have to carefully observe them.
Another issue is dealing with an uncooperative or violent patient. A CNA should remember that he or she is legally and ethically bound to care for such a patient in a calm and nonviolent manner. Thus, if you intend to work in the healthcare field, it’s important to receive intensive healthcare education and training to be well-informed of ethical implications.
